If you guys haven’t followed I totaled my 899 Panigale.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

A quick update, it has been deemed a complete loss. The shop looked at the water damage and assessed just the electronics damage at $19,000 dollars. They said there is water in the engine but they cannot give an estimate but could range from 3,000 - 10,000 in damage and that’s not including labor. They said low side the bike has $25,000 in total damage to it. I also received the police report and it was determined to be the other drivers fault for blocking both lanes.

I went test riding other super bikes but I have the same problem with those as I had with the 899.

They are super expensive and will require a big down payment and loan

They are pretty fragile - and it doesn’t take long if dropped to come up with a 5 digit repair bill which means I always ride with that in the back of my mind

Insurance rates are absolutely astronomical - Believe it or not the BMW is less expensive than the 899

I already have a Super sport so I don’t need a Super bike, though the power is intoxicating. My ‘13 Ninja 636:

After weighing in all the options of doing a new Superbike I decided I wanted to go a different route. I’m terrible at wheelies and an expensive fragile bike isn’t the best to learn on. I’ve decided I’m going super moto! I’ve found a beautiful KTM 690 SMC with Martini plastics and a TON of parts and if everything goes as planned that’s what will be joining my stable, best of all it will be paid for without a loan.

Yeah - I like the orange/black of KTM but those Martini plastics are just straight moto porn. LOVE IT.

It’s a Shame about the Panigale... (again, glad you were unharmed in the incident) But that 690 SMC does look like an awful lot of fun.

I’m super excited, been talking about a super for the past two years. It’s just never been the right time. Today is the now the right time. hahaha

I am so jealous. I’ve been wanting to be 2 wheels bad for a while and I just started watching and reading alot about Sumo’s.

And I love Martini...

After seeing a super moto (or motard as I like to call them) I’ve always wanted one as a practical bike, maybe it would be a good learning bike???

If you like driving, this will kill your desire to drive. Riding is the ultimate freedom, it exposes you to the elements, smells, tempurate changes and feel you just dont get from a car. Its a pretty awesome feeling to be cool and crisp in the mountains, and riding to the valley by the lake and smelling the fresh water (in Vermont). Do it, buy 2-3 bikes and never look back.

You think the KTM is too much for a newb? I don’t want to get something too nice to start with. I feel like I should get a under 3K bike to start with.

Totally! Great bike to learn on, even though this is a 690 it has ~64 hp and 65 ft/lbs tq. These bikes are not about horsepower, they wont win drag races, but they have tons of torque, so its accessible power. If you look at something like a 600RR (Honda) the torque is in the 60-70's, where the KTM has the same torque, lighter, and you dont have to rev it to 14,000 rpms.

This is on my buddies KTM 400 EXC. Not a ton of horsepower, you can get them for 2-3k and its completely street legal. I am going to buy this one in the spring but keep the dirt tires on it. I would suggest doing a 80/20 tires on it for you 80% street 20% dirt if you have any dirt roads in your area. Its alot of fun being wideopen on dirt roads sliding sideways with your foot out.

That is the coolest motorcycle I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve been looking for a dual sport to pick up, and if I found that one I would get it in a heartbeat.

Yeah the thought just occurred to me about having one as a learner, I’ve always looked at the sporty bikes like the Ninjas and such, because I love sport bikes like those but good to know a motard would be a good place to start (though maybe with smaller cc’s), thanks!

I’m quite impressed that you were able to do $25k in damage to a $15k bike.

That said, be careful with the new one. Supermotos may not be as fast as sportbikes, but they encourage much more stupidity.

My dad always said that if you do something, do it right. I also couldn’t believe it was that much in damage either.

Hey hey hey!
I placed a deposit on a ‘15 ZX-6R and in the spring I’ll be picking it up. How long have you had yours? Aside from the exhaust, any other work done to it?

I’ve had it since 0.6 miles on the clock almost 3 years. :) it has frame sliders, hot bodies tinted double bubble, fender eliminator, M4 slip on, vortex gas filler, wood craft rear set. I might be missing something but not 100% sure. But I will tell you that 9 out of 10 times I would ride the Ninja over the Ducati and the 1 time I wouldn't is just because I felt bad the 899 haven't been ridden. 636 is one hell of a bike, the stability is epic, great brakes, and it can do everything you want and more.
